The fleet of new energy vehicles in China is the second
largest in the world after the United States, representing 15.7% of the global stock
of light-duty plug-in electric vehicles.The country is also the world's leader in
the heavy-duty plug-in electric segment, including buses and commercial trucks.
The Chinese government uses the term new energy vehicles (NEVs) to designate plug-in
electric vehicles, and only pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles
are subject to purchase incentives. Initially, conventional hybrids were also included.
As of September 2015, over 250,000 new energy vehicles have
been sold in China since 2011, consisting of 164,137 all-electric vehicles and 85,951
plug-in hybrids. Of these, more than half, 136,733 NEVs, were sold during the first
nine months of 2015. These figures include heavy-duty commercial vehicles such buses
and sanitation trucks.
